Well, I was hoping quicker than Nov 1, but I guess that was more wishful thinking than anything else. It would be sweet if they opened up this summer.

Doesn't this still have to be put up for a vote in each of the counties where the tracks are residing?

Yeah, that will be taken care of asap and I'd be more than shocked if they don't pass the local votes.

I don't know what it is like in the rest of the state, but I still have family and friends that live near Wheeling and they say the whole area is pretty hot for this. I know there has been one opponent that has been quoted saying it isn't such a sure thing in the Northern Panhandle as some might expect, but I think he is the one with wishful thinking on that one. I don't know about the other two counties.

The legislation passed permits officials at West Virginia’s four racetracks to petition their respective county commissions to place a table gambling referendum on the ballot. Mountaineer Race Track and Gambling Resort President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Arneault said he would begin to work to get a referendum on the ballot “as soon as I can—as soon as it is both legally and feasibly possible.”

I also find this funny:
[ QUOTE ]
The West Virginia Council of Churches has vowed to organize to defeat any table gambling referendums.

Don't want to infringe on that Bingo night, now do we?

Some update on the tracks in the Northern Panhandle plans.

This is being challenged by a couple of groups in court, but I don't think this was unexpected either. I know the WV legislature did a little reworking of the bill so that it would survive court challenges.

Regardless, looks like the Northern Panhandle is looking to have this voted on in June.

Do you expect to see similar poker game selection that most AC or Vegas casinos offer? Or is it more likely to resemble the low stakes/high rake of the Florida 'casinos'?

[/ QUOTE ]

My understanding is that Florida has a statutory limit of $2 on all bets, which won't be present here. But I doubt you'll have the critical mass of higher stakes players to sustain a large variety of games.

My guess is you will see a lot of 1/2 NL and 2/4 or 3/6 Limit, which come to think of it, is what "most AC or Vegas casinos offer".

[/ QUOTE ]

This may be all the casino really wants, but if they wanted, I believe they could sustain a much bigger game, especially on weekends. On any given weeknight in Pittsburgh you have at least 20 5-10nl tables going in various local games. Also they would draw from the heavy gambling ohio towns like Youngstown,Warren and the river towns. WV could really benefit from drawing from one of the few areas in the country that doesn't have an easily accessible casino or indian gaming. They send 100 busses a week from Pittsburgh and N.E Ohio to Detroit,Atlantic City, and Niagara Falls. I have no doubt they could have a good 10-20nl game on weekends if they want to.

I'm interested in the Charles Town progress but it appears I still may be in for a long wait.
