Wine at a restaurant.

[/ QUOTE ]

Living in Ontario, we have new legislation that allows you to bring your own wine to a restaurant. Make what you will of that.

I got a Taco Supreme for $0.79 that could have cost a dime more. I had to have secks with the counter girl to get the discount but it was well worth it. My face now looks like a glazed donut but I saved a dime so who cares...

Im a cheap skate. I look for deals in everything and anything. Just a few weeks ago my wife and I had some family over for dinner. I called our favorite Thai restaurant and told them I was planning on making a big carry-out order over $100 and if they could offer me any deal. They said sure they can give me 10% off. Not much but it helps.

Any big purchase is usually negotiable, you can even negotiate at best buy.

[/ QUOTE ]

While you can at Best Buy, you're more likely to get freebee's thrown in. BB associates don't work on commission so they don't have much room to work.

Floor models are usually the best for getting prices dropped at Best Buy. They want to get those out the door as quick as they can.

------------

You really need to negotiate price anywhere where the associate that is helping you gets a commission on the sale.

BTW, Circuit City is better for negotiating than BB for the above mentioned reason.

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but if they haven't.....

A price tag is not a contract, the price is not binding.

A price tag is more like the store's offer to you.

You do not have to accept that offer.

Some store may not negotiate off of the suggestion, but most will.

You just have to find the guy who can go off list, many employees cannot.

Its very rare to see a store where no one has the authority to negotiate.

Regards,
Woodguy

I'm gonna feel like negotiating at the grocery store next time. "$2 for the gallon of milk, final offer. And throw in some gum."

whoa this I did not know. So what constitutes a "big sale" and at what point will you get laughed at? Will the floorman laugh at me if I try to haggle 50 bucks off the price of an ipod or a purchase in the mid-100s range (200-400)?

I knew about mattresses, but was surprised when I first learned it.

Jewelry/watches. I just got a high end watch for 25% off by saying "I want that watch, and I want 25% off."

One that people are always surprised by: car washes. They ask what you want, you say "I want the deluxe package, but I will only pay X (X=less than the posted price)". They say OK.

I don't believe you can negotiate at the supermarket. The manager who is paid $10 an hour has no interest in knocking the box of uncle ben's rice from $1.89 down to $1.53. Most grocery stores offer "gold points" cards, which are basically frequent buyer credits. They are redeemable for cash off a future purchase. This is their way of negotiating. If you walk into a grocery store off the street and tell the manager you want 30 cents knocked off the box of cherry tomatoes you're buying, he'll laugh and tell you to go [censored] yourself.

Mattresses are highly negotiable. I paid $1,000 all-in, tax included, for a mattress that was $1,780 on the sticker. I had to walk out of the store twice to get that deal, but I knew I'd get it in the end.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is hotel rooms. If a hotel isn't full, they'll almost always give you a discount if you ask. I have done this a few times, and once I got a major discount (think something like $85 off a $230 room).

It never hurts to ask. Never pay the first offer for anything over a few hundred bucks in a store, like a piece of furniture or a TV.

The line that you're new to the neighborhood and are looking for a good person to do business with down the line is always helpful.
