I still don't understand how people can continue to live and move to this city. As bad as it is most everywhere, it just amazes me since there are a million other places to live which are safer, cleaner, and overall just better than Detroit.

[/ QUOTE ]

The suburban area is really quite nice. Detroit is still a sh*thole, with its only redeeming qualities found in Greektown, Windsor, the RenCen, and the quickly decaying Cobo Center.

Many of those who claim "detroit" aren't actually living in the city limit per se. The rest of Michigan is a shithole as well?

[/ QUOTE ]
I say the whole of lower Michigan is a hole, save a few towns. Ann Arbor is a good little town, there are patches of suburbs around Detroit that are okay, and there are some nice towns on the western side along Lake Michigan.

Detroit is garbage but the area around it specifically Oakland County is one the richest counties in America. It ranks 26th in the country per capita income and 20th in personal per capita income. There are some really nice areas like Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills.

[ QUOTE ]
Bloomfield Hills is a city in Oakland County of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 3,940. Bloomfield Hills consistently ranks as one of the top five wealthiest cities in the United States consisting of over 1,000 households — it currently is listed at the number four position, and is the richest city outside of California or Florida. Bloomfield Hills is located in Michigan's wealthiest county[1], Oakland County, and is located 14 miles outside of downtown Detroit.

I lived in MI untill i was 22, mostly in the detroit suburbs and while I would say that many of the burbs are nice, like Birmingham, Royal Oak, Ann Arbor etc... but on a whole .. cdutilb is pretty much correct.

MI has some nice outdoor areas, great hunting and backpacking etc.. but besides some quaint towns on Lake Mi (like traverse city) the citys and towns are either crapy or boring.

but then again .. that is my opinion of most of the US. The closest place I could compare to MI is Jersy .. some nice areas, but overall .... crappy or boreing (lol.. let the guidos flame me now )

The structure that's connected to it, or the one by the freeway? Keys held between the fingers like extra "knuckles" are also a good idea

[/ QUOTE ]

There is no structure "connected" to Greektown. The Greektown "named" structure is over a block away. You leave the structure, into a building, through that building, and across the street into Greektown. There may be a habitrail like walkway from one to the other, but still.

That structure is still there, and aside from walking through a mostly vacant building at 3:30am, it felt safe.

The structure next to the freeway (I-375) is gone. Torn down about 3 months ago or so. That's the one that was unsettling. I did the keys in the knuckles before I got a mini-leatherman for a groomsman's gift. I never had even a brush with a disturbing sitch, but that structure just screamed "muggings inside!"

I've been to Detroit countless times. To the casinos, sporting events, bars, concerts, clubs, and other events. Both downtown and in the surrounding areas. I have never been in any kind of bad situation, ever. You will get hit up for money a lot but that's about it. Some people can be exteremely persistent but they are asking, not taking.

Yea, Im from the suburbs of Detroit, and lived in Oakland County all my life (Bloomfield Hills, holla'). Anyways, I would frequently go downtown for tigers games, plays, to COBO for the autoshow, lions, and wings games. And I never once felt unsafe or insecure about my surroundings.

I mean sure a lot of the areas are not aesthetically pleasing, and there are some seedy looking areas, but its not as bad as everyone makes it seem.

The areas around the MGM and Greektown also aren't that bad, and even at the MotorCity, you literally get right off at the Casino. So its fine.

People who have never been downtown, need to stop being so negative about Detroit and michigan in general.

There are parts of Detroit that make the bombed-out pictures of Baghdad look friendly and inviting.

That said, last time I was in Detroit for a couple of weeks, I played plenty of NL in Greektown and the game was nice and juicy. IIRC the blinds were $1/$2 with no cap on the buy-in, so plenty of deep stacks.

You're probably right about the juicy, but the only 1/2 games they have are 50min-100max and 200min-200max. The only uncapped game they spread is 300min. and that is 5/10NL
