Imagine my surprise when he turned over 99. I can't see calling with less than QQ pf being profitable.

Wow, that makes his bet on the turn pretty horrible. If he calls with 99 he at least has to put you on overpair AND AK. AK got there on the turn and any overpair has an easy call.
Maybe this is way over my head/or he waited for a good board to bluff you...
