Re: Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?
I'd be willing to bet that less then 50% of Americans could give the date of Pearl Harbor. A similar event that killed about the same number of people. I'd be willing to bet that even 25% couldn't get the day right, but might know the month.
And so, what's your point? 9/11 happens to be an easily remembered date. If it had been on October 14th I doubt anyone would remember it. |

Re: Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?
"In November 2006 Iraq's Health Minister Ali al-Shemari said that since the March 2003 invasion between 100,000 and 150,000 Iraqis have been killed."

Re: Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?
A lot of good reasons given why we remember 9/11 and not the day Katrina hit.
Also, this country has been hit by hurricanes many times. It has been attacked by flying planes into buildings only once. Heck, has that even happened anywhere else in the world? |

Re: Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?
Seriously?
I was under the impression that the death toll for Katrina was > 3000, apparently I'm wrong. I understand why it's more emotionally charged obviously, I'm not sure I like all the reasons why that's true. That's not really the discussion I'm trying to have here. |

Re: Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?
Nobody refers to Katrina by the date, so why would people know the exact date?
The attacks are referred to as 9/11. The hurricane is referred to as Katrina. I don't get your point about date recognition. As far as tragedy, obviously loss of life hurts, but this is like asking "what is more painful for family, someone dying in a car crash or someone getting beat to death with a bat." both are going to lead to mourning, but its pretty easy to see the difference. |

I'm not shocked that it doesn't resonate with people as much as 9/11, but I am surprised that it doens't resonate louder than it does. |

[/ QUOTE ] it's a natural disaster. what day did the chicago fire occur? what about the san francisco earthquake? i recognize that katrina is very recent but again - it took place over several days. 'where were you when you heard about the WTC attacks?' is a question everyone here can answer. 'where were you when you heard about hurricane katrina?' is probably a question no one but folks from the gulf coast could answer. |

The United States was attacked. You know, like in a movie, only it was real life. No one cares about a rain storm. |

[ QUOTE ] Do you know, off the top of your head, on what day Hurriance Katrina occured? I don't. I do'nt think I'm the only one. Why not? Date not catchy like 9/11 or other reasons? If forced, which would you argue is the greater American tragedy? [/ QUOTE ] Single event or cause and effect? This is part of my argument from yesterday on IRC. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry I missed that (not really). Cliff Notes? Edit because I am dumb and QPips already mentioned catchy. |
