Question for OOT in light of what yesterday was?

Do you know, off the top of your head, on what day Hurriance Katrina occured?

I don't. I do'nt think I'm the only one.

Why not? Date not catchy like 9/11 or other reasons?

If forced, which would you argue is the greater American tragedy?

natural disaster killing black people = no one cares
brown people blowing up New York = everyone cares

9/11 = tragedy

Katrina = catastrophe

Single event or cause and effect? This is part of my argument from yesterday on IRC.

"Hurricane Katrina" was an event that took place over a series of days. 9/11 was obviously a much more punctuated series of events. I remember the general month/year of Katrina, but how do you define "occurred"? The first day it made landfall?

If you are trying to make a political point you need to hash out some of your terms imo. Doesn't seem like apples to apples at the moment.

we know 9/11 was on 9/11 because we call it 9/11 obv. if we called pearl harbor whatever the hell day it happened on, we'd all remember it too.

btw 9/11 passed without my noticing it was 9/11 at all. but then again i'm living in hong kong right now. did they run news stories on it? god 6 years later, i would hope it would be minimal.

Half as many people died in Katrina and it was a natural disaster. 9/11 was unexpected and broke the notion that we were untouchable. 9/11 and it isn't even close.

There was obviously one specific day where NO got wrecked, that's the day I'm talking about. I do think that part of it is that Katrina was longer lasting in some sense.

I'm not trying to make a point really, it just occured to me that I have no idea when it happened beyond "sometime in autumn right near the start of the football season".

(and also that I think in terms of body count, destruction, and lasting impact on the area, it's a lot worse than 9/11, but seems far less emotionally charged)

what are you talking about, 1/2 as many people died. and you really can't figure out why katrina is less emotionally charged?

it really sonuds like you're trying to make a point here
