AQo is only a 60/40 against J9s.
With the amount of money in the pot, if pushing made him fold and raising made him come over the top, you should push. Push EV = +15,000 Raise/Call EV = 0.6*(47,000) - 0.4*(-38,000) = +13,000 AQo is just not strong enough to want action here, with these stacks. You're 60/40 or 50/50 against a lot of hands. When stacks are small compared to blinds, winning pots without showdown is almost always best.

As I just said above, do push preflop.
But him calling and us missing the flop is not the danger. You should be pushing every flop. It'd be a mistake if either one of you folded on any flop. When one of you bets the flop, it's 15k to call into a 60k pot. Preflop you should just be doing whatever will get you the most folds, unless you have a way to get him to get all in with stuff like 97o.
