If you do stay at the El Cortez, please post a trip report here when/if you get back. I can't wait to read it.

I presume that you mean the Golden Spike. Very interesting in a slumming sort of way.

The three scummiest Casinos downtown are:
The Western, The El. Cortez, and the Gold Spkie.
Of these I'd only possibly consider staying at the Gold Spike,
but only at a very last resort. However, the room will have a bed and it will probably be clean.

If your not keen on staying
downtown, I would stay at the Sahara. Very nice rooms and the
Casino has a a reasonable poker room. Its on the Monorail
and its waht $30 to $40 per night. You may be able to get
a poker room rate.

If you can find a hotel near the south end of the strip
in your budget. I would do that. It will be closer to the better card rooms.

Downtown, I have stayed at Main Street Station and Fitzgeralds. Both were great. Main Street Station has just renovated their rooms and they are spectacular given the modest price. Approximatley $50/night. But alas no poker room.

I can just imagine sitting in the Sahara poker-room logging in my 6 hours of 2/4 limit per day to get a $10 discount on the hotel room.

There is usually a loose 4-8 game going at night. Doing three hours of that for a room rate likely ot be under $50 is not such a bad thing.

Being far away from any other room, on the other hand, is a downer.

I think that spending 3 hours each night in the Sahara Poker room compared with being ANYWHERE ELSE IN VEGAS actually IS such a bad thing.

El Cortez isn't that bad. It was recently renovated, and the casino part is cheap and clean enough. It isn't NEARLY as bad as people say it is. The Spike is way dirtier. Both can be fun if you are in the mood.

I stopped in both the Gold Spike and the El Cortez last month. I had to step over some homeless people laying on the sidewalk to get into the Gold Spike.

The funniest thing I saw at the Gold Spike was the High Limit Slots area. The area was demarcated by a metal porch railing with 2 armed guards protecting the entrance. Within the area - 3 $1 machines.

The funniest sighting at the El Cortez was the Blackjack pit. Three tables wedged together at the end of a row of slots. It was so cramped in there that the dealers chairs abutted each other and the Pit Boss overlooked the activity from the players' side of the tables.

I regret not having visited the Western.
