Default How is this?

The check/call - check/raise - bet

This line is best used in HU situations when you flop a strong hand. General requirements would be as follows:

- Your opponent has shown marginal strength preflop or must have a tendency to bet when checked to. When a typical player raises UTG, that doesn't count as "marginal strength". However, if everyone folds to the button who raises, then that could be considered as such.

- You are out of position.

- Your hand figures to be best, but isn't so strong that you are looking to get a lot of action on it. Your hand should also be tough to outdraw if it is currently best (since your opponent might take a free card).

Example:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].
6 folds, Hero completes, BB raises, Hero calls.

Flop: (4 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (3 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets, Hero raises, UTG calls.

River: (7 BB) T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls.

Final Pot: 9 BB

This is an actual hand from a session last night. The villian had AJ and MHING.

Do you regularly just complete there, not raise? Or was this a specific case?

Jackpot table. I wanted to keep the pot small to avoid the jackpot drop. The idea behind my post is that right after I looked at the flop, I decided was going to check/call-check/raise-bet. It is really nice to have a ballpark idea of when you should use certain plays.

The bet - bet - check/raise

This is a good line to use against tight players who you think are calling down with a weak top pair hand. Consider the following before using this line:

- You must be out of position and heads up on the river.

- Your hand is strong and figures to win the pot more often then not.

- The board should be drawless on the flop.

- Your opponent should usually be a tight player. In a raised pot, a weak-tight player might be calling down with a weak top pair that he will bet on the river when you check to him.

- If the pot goes 3-bets preflop against a strong player, you should often times use this line when he is taking the call-call-call and bet if checked to line against you.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].
1 fold, Hero raises, 5 folds, Button calls, 1 fold, BB calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, Button calls, BB folds.

Turn: (4.25 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

River: (6.25 BB) 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero raises, Button calls.

Final Pot: 10.25 BB

The villian in this hand was a strong player. He showed KJ and MHIG.

You should also make sure the player is not too passive either for the bet,bet,c/r. Keep the examples coming!

Inducing bluffs (Call-check-call and Bet-check-call)

- The pot should usually be fairly small. You don't want to risk giving a free card in a big pot in order to induce a bluff.
- You must be heads up in position and your hand must have showdown value.
- Your opponent needs to have the ability to do at least one of the following:

a) Check/raise you.
b) Fold a hand that is drawing thin and either call a river bet or bet the river as a bluff.

- You should only make this play against people who bluff too often. You should not make this play against loose players who will call your turn bet while drawing thin.

- This play works best when a player check/calls you on drawless board, or when a tricky player checks to you after showing strength both preflop and on the flop.

- It is sometimes acceptable to raise the river after you check behind on the turn. You must have a very strong hand to do so, and you must be sure that your opponent will fold to a turn bet.

- This play also works well when you hold a big overpair and a good player check/calls you on the flop and then the top card pairs on 4th street. The correct play is oftentimes to check behind with the intention of calling a river bet.

Not so good example:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is CO with A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
5 folds, Hero raises, 1 fold, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (6 SB) A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds.

Turn: (4 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

River: (4 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 6 BB

He had TT and MHIG. With AK/AQ, I think betting this turn and checking behind with the intention to raise the river are both okay.

These examples are awesome. When I see a flop heads up I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to do the whole way, and then I adjust depending on my opponent and cards that come.

Default I\'m bored, one more

The bet/call - bet - bet

- You are usually 1st to act and the field is rather large. It works best when you put the last raise in preflop, or when a late position player puts in the last raise preflop.
- You either have a very strong hand or a very strong draw.
- Your flop bet gets raised by a late positon player where lots of people have called in the middle. You have to decide if you want to 3-bet or stop and go. The more likely the raiser has a made hand and will raise again on the turn, the more you should consider using this line.
- The best times to use it are when you flop a set/straight/flush or when a flopped draw turns in to a powerful hand.

Note: There is another time to use this line, and it happens in a HU pot where you don't want your opponent to take a free card. That will be talked about at a later time.

Example:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
6 folds, CO calls, Button raises, Hero 3-bets, BB calls, CO calls, Button calls.

Flop: (12 SB) 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero bets, BB calls, CO calls, Button raises, Hero calls, BB calls, CO calls.

Turn: (10 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero bets, BB calls, CO calls, Button folds.

River: (13 BB) A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, CO folds, Hero 3-bets, BB calls.

Final Pot: 19 BB

He had QT for a straight, and MHIG.
