The odds are that the river didn't complete a draw for villain. Don't get scared of hands that you're opponents might have, let them show you they have a better hand through being aggressive (like any rule, there are exceptions). Sure, you'll lose a few bets with this mindset, but you'll pick up bigger pots when you win. Betting and raising helps you gather info about your opponent's hands, not so much on the river but particularly on the flop.

If he was holding out for a runner runner straight or a runner, runner flush, that just sucks.

I bet the river and call a raise and make a note.

Now, if there were two to the flush on the flop and he called the whole way and the river realized the flush, then I check behind fo sho because I'm weak as hell.
