Anyone remember when we all thought refs and umps were great? It was like 6-7 years ago...before all the doohickies we have nowadays.

Possibly uses for replay:

Who touched ball last on out of bounds?
Did guy step on out of bounds line?
Did guy have foot on 3 point line (they already video review this I belive)
Did guy beat shot/game clock?
Did ball touch rim?

the refs almost always get these things right in basketball though, which is actually quite amazing.

The fouls are what they often get wrong and if you opened them up to review the games would take forever, as there are ALOT of fouls in basketball and alot of them are iffy

Uh, no, I sure don't. Did you mean to type 60-70 years ago? I still don't think it would be true.

Nice list. I like replays. The argument that it makes the game too long is silly. The games take forever already, I don't see what an extra minute or 2 to ensure that the right team won is gonna hurt.

Actually NBA games are relatively short compared to MLB and NFL games. But its not so much the added length. Its the game stoppage that would suck. Most fans would agree that usually the last minute of the 4th quarter can suck if teams constantly just foul each other for free throws.

The reason I posted this is...being a avid fan of NBA for 20 years, last season's nba finals was an absolute travesty.

The calls on wade were absolutely atrocious. I really hate a lot of the officiating in the nba in general. It is by far the worst out of any league. It is probably my ONLY complaint about bball. BUt it is enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth after a game.

I just thought i'd mention this because I realy do like the NFL. Thanks to instant replay, a lot of the bad calls actually do get corrected. Only problem is with PI. however, a good majority do a reasonable job with it.

I would agree with you that last years PLAYOFFS were pretty bad. However I don't think instant replay has a big impact on the overall quality. In some cases it might actually adversely effect officiating. Look at the NFL, they have instant replay and [censored] refs. I do feel your pain though, but I think reffing is a really really hard job and I guess we all give them to much grief.

Phane,

You couldn't possibly use replay for fouls.
