Never buy a cat!
I love cats (and dogs), but I would never pay for a cat.
Ask around, check the paper, etc. Someones always giving them away. Go to any restaurant and ask the wait staff. I'll bet you even money you don't hafta to go to 2 restaurants to find one of the employees who knows someone with kittens.
While getting one at the pound is nice, if your renting the pound can be a pain in the ass, making you prove the landlord's cool with it. Not to mention the pound usually charges adoption fees.

no, it's actually located in china town. but it's actually more of a butcher shop than an animal shelter...
