I just got $50 knocked off the price of a jacket at a ski shop by telling the proprietor that I really liked the item, but wasn't willing to pay the posted price.

r,
quids is correct. You can negotiate down from the listed price at places like Best Buy. I'm not talking about floor model or anything. Standard, brand new stuff. |

I'm pretty sure the ability to negotiate is inversely related to the volume of sales of the product in question.
example: If you try to negotiate on a can of green beans at the grocery store, you'll get laughed at. If you try to negotiate with a salesman who sells maybe 4 leather couches a week at a furniture store, you should be able to talk him down. Also, you can negotiate almost anything in Mexican border towns. |

[/ QUOTE ] This seems like the most honest, cut-to-the-chase method of negotiating. I want X, but not for Y. The key is to get the seller to throw out the number, not you. When they ask "well how much WOULD you spend on it?" Say, "Gee, I don't know..." and let them throw out a number. |

All purchases everywhere are negotiable. Don't believe me? Try it.
(Even food is negotiable at supermarkets if you're buying in bulk). Edit: If its not a Mom and Pop Store, you usually need to talk to a manager if you want to negotiate. |

z,
This is weird because I had been thinking about making this very same post. A co-worker negotiated the price of a washer and dryer, which I had no idea you could do. |

[/ QUOTE ] I just bought all new appliances for the house I just bought, and it's a huge advantage to buy multiple appliances at once. I got a range, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and got about 33% of the listed price. When I went in a week later, I saw a same model fridge in the discount area since it was briefly used, and decided to try and get that moidel instead, they gave me even more of a discount on the new model instead. |

[/ QUOTE ] Wow, I can't believe people don't know to negotiate on things like furniture and appliances. I always do. Another recent discovery I made for negotiating is dental work. I negotiate heavily with the dentist for any work I need done. Haven't tried it with a doctor or hospital yet, but I think they might be receptive too. |
