Default Re: Bush urged to intervene after Castro\'s death

[ QUOTE ]
I believe that the primary assumptions of what happens after Castro have always been flawed, at least for the short term afterwards. Castro's brother and the rest of the military and internal security aparatus have a strong vested interest in maintaining a totalitarian government, inlcuding the younger generation of such military and police that has slowly taken over from the revolutionary generation at the lower and mid-levels. Many of them would stand to be the targets of reprisals by the population if the government were changed, so they aren't going to go quietly right away after Castro is gone.

So my prediction is that after Castro is buried that their government will have the same repressive mechanisms in place and not be asking us for assistance that isn't one-way and non dependant on internal change.

[/ QUOTE ]

Castro's brother can't be that much younger than Castro. And the report says the change will be very gradual. This isn't China, communism isn't going to last there, and even China is moving more and more towards capitalism.

[ QUOTE ]
Do you argue that if a Cuban transitional government requests our help and humanitarian aid from us such as medical supplies, we should turn them down, because that will make the rest of the World hate us?

[/ QUOTE ]Are you pretending to be naive or are you actually naive? The United States government no longer cares what the rest of the world thinks or does. This is the century where America will re-assert its power in the world.

Washington wants to do away with the Cuban relic. This much is a fact. Now, do you suppose that the current kind of American leadership is one that would rather wait for the Cubans to make a choice or will it kinda try to bring about sooner, to force a choice? (And make that the correct choice, please.)

Details don't truly matter but do you think that "the creation of an $80m fund to promote democracy" is intended only for radio broadcasts? Modern Latin American history is a history of American interventionism -- always with "funds promoting democracy".

That's a likely peripheral effect, but it doesn't matter since the US government is determined to govern the world.

While Europe in general may only hate Bush, the middle east in general certainly hates America and Americans.

This is, of course, a very laudable wish.

oh yeah, "assistance", HA!

Since the days of Tommy Jefferson, US planners have viewed Cuba as a US posession, it just hasnt happened yet.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, that's why we allowed Cuba to become independant after the Spanish American War.
