I'm with Rearden. I like the feeling of being functionally strong, and (getting) in shape. It just feels good to be able to move heavy stuff, run fast, jump high, and feel comfortable with your body. Looking good is also nice too, but it's definitely not my #1 priority.

Actually I'm probably going to play rugby in the fall, so getting in shape for that is on my mind as well.

#1 for me is mental state, being in good shape and eating right helps me in almost all other areas of life. force of habit and self esteem are also in there somewhere.

I'm getting back into it for a few reasons:

1) I want to look good for the Mrs.
2) Long term good health
3) Be better at physical activities (moving stuff, working in the yard for long periods of time, and sports (basketball primarily, even though I am slow, short, and white.)

Looks and self esteem. I'm just more confident when I look and feel good.

It feels really good to be really strong. And it feels even better to look like a strong guy, but be even stronger than you look.

There's a large variety of people in here - athletes, bodybuilders, people who just want to get fit, people who want to drop a few pounds, and so forth. Why do you hit the gym every other day, go running outside, avoid french fries, and eat grilled chicken until you can't even taste it anymore?

I work out, diet, and train for (mainly) one reason only: To excel as a baseball player.

The comments about "wow, you look good man" and "have you lost some weight" (typically when I go back to Cleveland) are secondary, but always nice motivators.

What part of Cleveland? What HS did you go to?

Grew up in Ohio City (when it wasn't as nice as it is now!), moved to Parma when my parents wanted a better life for their kids (I'm the oldest). I went to Parma Senior HS, then a short stint at OSU, then Baldwin-Wallace.

I did it originally to lose weight, and I still do, though I'm at a point where I don't really have much more to lose. I'm going to continue to do it for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it feels really good, both physically and mentally, to be in good shape. Everything single act I take is made easier by being healthy. This is especially true compared to the shape I was in a couple years ago, over 100 lbs heavier and a 15 cigarette/day smoker. I haven't had a cigarette in over a year, and this alone makes a huge difference. I also like the fact that I have 106/59 BP with a resting heart rate of 55 BPM. I feel like I'm doing my best to live a long and healthy into my waning years. Of course, I like looking better as well.

Because it's good to leave your comfort zone. If you aren't pushing a little further each day then you aren't living.
