Would someone please explain "carbon offsets." Do we all get a certain amount of carbon to use that we can sell the rights to?

[/ QUOTE ]

Carbon offsets is just a fancy phrase for pushing the burden of being environmentally sound onto someone else.

Carbon offsets are basically charitable donations you make to projects that reduce CO2 levels like planting trees and alternative energy research. The offset purveyors try to figure out how much CO2 a given amount of money will remove and tell the donors that their donation has reduced CO2 by so much.

Do someone can participate in activities that give off lots of CO2 and then just pay somebody to plant some trees to "offset" it?

New Scientist

You know that guy is a meteorolgist, right?

For the record, I would be very interested in seeing any data that suggests that man made global warming is NOT the consensus.

Notte: Please do not link the 500 scientist list, that has already been debunked by the scientists who are actually named in the list.

What a scam. Let's make racial prejudice offsets. You can tell as many [censored] jokes as you want and then pat yourself on the back as you pay somebody to teach at least two children about racial sensitivity.

Actually the fact that they are hypocrites is not the problem. The market accommodates hypocrites all the time - haven't you noticed the proliferation of companies who want to sell you "green" things? Everyone in some way pays to assuage their consciences; for heaven's sake, GE is offering a green credit card. The problem is that while they can pay to offset their carbon indulgences, they advocate collectivist proposals for the rest of us, under the guise that we need to do SOMETHING. As Econ 101 explains, enforcing a quota raises the price, helping (or sometimes not really hurting) two groups: the already endowed rich (who can afford higher prices), and the government who primarily will be making a [censored]-ton of money from the auctions, and indulgence-peddlers, who will assuage the guilt of the endowed rich. The losers are those poorer diffuse, politically diverse consumers - the ones who climate change will presumably hurt most. Such are amongst the many failures of democracy (though I am not an ACist).
