My dad thought that pi was 22/7, pretty weird for a software engineer/analytical thinking type.

[/ QUOTE ]

Archimedes approximated (what we now call) pi to be less than 22/7 and greater than 223/71. Engineers are notorious for using approximations.

Can we start a thread on things we Americans think are weird when foreigners say them? Like how they say university, or maths, stuff like that.

[/ QUOTE ]

"Maths" is the plural of math, it is used when talking about more than one mathematical subject, such as complex analysis and abstract algebra.

Fishes is the correct word to use when talking about more than one species of fish.

22/7 is a commonly used approximation when without a calculator.

It's one thing using an approximation, but being an engineer and believing that pi is exactly 22/7 is pretty freaking weird.

During the Rodney King Riots in LA (my hometown) they kept talking about whether and when the National Guard would be brought in. HS classmate of mine asked, "Why would they bring him in? What can he do?"

Everyone knows that the National Guard was a woman then.

How to build a fire without lighter fluid or gas.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd be shocked if more the half of oot knows how to start a decent fire, and it is ridiculous that people don't know how to do this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you mean from scratch using no matches/lighter, as in flint and tinder?

[/ QUOTE ]

Matches/Lighter would be allowed but it really should be without them as well.

BTW, you would need more than just flint and tinder.

Starting a fire, and keeping it going, is such a basic survival skill that it is just sad everyone doesn't know how to do this. Then again I believe everyone should know how to shoot a riflw too
