Herbie,
You have to realise that most people do not want to create/be in awkward situations. So most people will lie to avoid them. (e.g. Most girls will not tell you no about going on a date, they'll just not return calls etc...) It's human nature. You have to live with it. BTW, Tirerack for tires, Walmart to install them. Cheap.
