POG Community Thread

I am feeling left out because I just don't have enough time to play games, but I still check POG first thing every day. I need some place I can post ramblings, trip reports and pictures without the pressure of creating a new thread every time I get the urge. So consider this the companion to the poker happenings thread that has been around forever.

I will start by bitching. I am a lazy bastard, but I am good at creating the illusion that I am working hard, and like most of us here I have always been smarter than most of my coworkers. That meant I could get more work done in less time and thus appear more productive.

In April I took a new job with a great company and took on significantly more responibility. It turns out I am no longer smarter than everyone else. I am actually dumber. I also have to work which is a bit of an alien experience. The average person in my position is putting in sixty hours a week which doesn't fit my 10-4 lifestyle.

I am still playing poker, but I pay absolutely no attention to my opponents. I finally stopped trying to use Pokertracker because I never looked at the stats or paid any attention to my own. Not surprisingly my balance - aside from rakeback - is exactly the same as it was at the beginning of the year. I am the king of treading water.

I'm pretty sure if I ever took a job where I was dumber than most of my coworkers I wouldn't stay there more than 3 months (whether I wanted to or not)

Sometimes I worry about this, then I realize I'm never taking a job in Mensa.

Also: working hard for other people sucks, a lot. And this thread was a great idea.

I wouldn't say I am dumber. I would say that I am less productive. If there is an index of usefullness that is comprised of intelligence/productivity and drive I am on the lower end. I just need to work harder.

re: working

I'm of two minds right now. I currently have my schedule set to four ten-hour days so that I get three days off each week. During these three days I currently do a little consulting but it's actually very little. Right now I have the choice of either expanding the amount of consulting work that I do, which is pretty basic stuff with databases and whatnot, or approaching poker like it's my job for those three days and seeing where that goes. Actually, I can't just magically expand the amount of consulting I do unless people are willing to pay me to do it, which means canvassing for business, which is another time investment with no guaranteed payoff. I also realize that poker may just be an excuse to sit around on my ass for 10 hours a day on my days off.

But there's no chance of me not being the smartest person at work, I could bash myself in the skull with a sledgehammer, smoke a bong full of stupid and lobotomize myself with a pitchfork and I'd still be a dazzling intellectual giant compared with my colleagues.

I'd be amazed if I ever had a job working with people smarter than me.

Not just because there aren't many people smarter than me, but also because I'm not quite sure how I'd get such a job in the first place when I have no college degree or employment history.

Amp, imagine being in the casino business. There are some real Einsteins running around making completely insane decisions in this racket. I think that even Scott Howard's Mom would be smarter than the average casino manager by about 100 IQ points.
