Ran had the same problem.
Japan had problems with Kurosawa and didn't want to send it.
Since it has partially funded by France, France tried to submit it, but the Academy did not let them, claiming the director and most of the funds were Japanese, so it should be sent by Japan.

I think it was with Talk to Her. Because that movie got Almodovar a nomination for director and it even won screenplay, yet it wasn't nominated for foreign film.

Is there a rule that "Animated Film" categories have to nominate only kids movies? Or is there some other reason why Linklater keeps getting ignored ("Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly")? At least throw the guy a bone and give him a nomination!

Cars is actually a great movie, but you have to be the right audience. My kids love it, and both my wife and I love it, but on completely different levels. Since we're in our 40s, it has a different message. I overheard a 20-something say how much it sucked and I dearly wanted to tell him to wait 20 years and he'd find out how wrong he was.

as long as Dreamgirls isn't the Best Picture, then I can see the rationale behind any of the films that may win

MrMon,

I haven't yet watched Cars. But you have now convinced me to try and view it from different perspectives as I watch it...That is, I will try to understand the appeal to someone in their 40s (with what little capacity I will be able to do so).

I tend to enjoy animated movies that have something to offer to audiences older than kids, while most of my friends would hate them.

I have no idea who will win Best Picture. But it is becoming increasingly likely that I will not have seen it....simply becuase I can't go see all of these movies that are in the running (though..I have seen LMS)

Glad I could help! Seriously, everyone should watch Cars, it's clearly a movie put together with so much love and affection for the subject, it just shines through on the screen. I've seen it several times now, both on the big screen and on DVD, (thanks kids!) and after watching the mini-doc on the making of it, I was dead on about why it was made the way it was and the real message of the movie. Being almost the same age as the director, John Lasseter, and with kids as well, I knew exactly where he was coming from and what he was trying to get across to the audience, all while entertaining the kids. The damn thing actually brings a tear to my eye when I watch it.

I get to see more animated movies than most because of the kids, and this one is far superior to the others, even the much acclaimed Monster House, which I didn't really like, partially due to technical problems. Pixar is almost always the best there is in animation, they've got some sort of special magic you can see even in the trailers for their new movie Ratatouille. Don't know how they do it, but they do. (Director of Ratatouille is Brad Bird, which probably explains a lot.)

while i agree it shouldn't win, it is a vastly superior film to Chicago, so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world (or even this decade)
