Default Stats for sports besides baseball

Reading through a few of these huge baseball debate threads has gotten me really interested in all these Sabermetric-type measurements that "explain" baseball tons better than traditional stats. However, I think that I've concluded that, for me, it's actually somewhat more interesting to look into these stats than watch an actual game.

So my question is, are there any comparable statistics for say, basketball or football, which just so happen to be my two favorite spectator sports?

Basketball has what I believe is called the Hollinger efficiency index. I know they do it for the NBA. It is a +/- sliding scale that is an interesting indicator of performance. Some big formula figures it out.
