AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
Just for a little backround this hand is played at the broadway casino in Birmingham. The 20 pound rebuy comp stared with 98 players and we are now down to 14. I have a sidebet going one for 1000 pounds that i'll last longer than Ken whose sitting on my right and has about T50,000 chips at this point. I've been very aggressive the last few rounds and people have started to notice and maybe suspect that i'm stealing from them(which i was).
Blinds are 1K/2k and it's 7 handed when this hand comes up Stack sizes Me(30,000) BB(60,000) it's folded around to me in the co and look down to see A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]j [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. I raise to 5000 which is my stanard amount The bb whose blind I've stolen the last three times decides to defend. I think his range is pretty huge here as he's probably fed up with me raising him. Flop comes J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] BB bets out 5K and it's one me to act Your Move? |

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
I don't think a push is an overbet here.
If you raise to 12-15k here you don't have much behind, and it will send up as many alarm bells or more that you're committed. |

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
I considered all my options.
Push-I could be ahead here if he has something like KJ-TJ, A9-k9, QT or only slighly behind to even money with pair flush draw combos Call-i could wait for a safe turn card or just play a small pot since staying alive is probably more important than accumulating chips at this point fold-I could be behind if he has J9, T8, 97, 77. I don't think he has JJ or 99 here very often. I eventually pushed |

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
i think a push is definitely the correct play without a sidebet.
the sidebet makes it more interesting, but i have no idea how to calculate the various $EV possibilities (especially without the payout structure, although, to be honest, i probably couldn't do it even with the payout structure). |

easy push, and that sidebet sounds huge, i'd wanna maximize my FE, probably just push PF.

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
I think I have too much to push pre flop. If i had say 20,000 or less i think pushing would be right. I'm not afraid to play post flop poker late in a tourney as many are. people just move all there chips in all the time and while at certain times i think it's right i think they would be better if they tried to make their weaker opponents make more decisions by leaving more chips left to bet. also i don't think a push here will ever be called by a worse hand against these players. However this 5000 bet will be called by worse hands and I will be able to use my position on the later betting rounds.

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
my point about pushing was because of the 1k sidebet. that's a big bet, first place in this tournament probably isn't much more than that. So this sidebet could make me push pf, because i just want tosurvive, and not worry about any confrontations.
And i think pushing here is probably only marginally worse than raising 5k, but with less variance. |

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
I call and see if I can extract any more money from him. It just seems unlikely here he has 10/8 for the straight, but not impossible. I'd much more like to see a non heart turn and push. Your hand is good enough where I don't like the push on the flop. Sure a Queen or a King can come, but I think the BB will bet again with weak top pair or middle pair often enough to make that play more profitable. How did it turn out?

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
He thought for about 15 seconds and called and showed 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] leaving me as slight dog. turn was a 3 and river brought another 8 sending me to the rail. So I lost the last longer bet. Personally i don't like how my opponent played it either. I actually would have reraised my 5000 bet pre-flop. When someone keeps raising you have to play back at them with any two cards sometime and playing his hand is going to be difficult out of position. He would prefer the hand to be done preflop. If he was on the button I think calling with the intention of trying to outplay me on a scary board or flop a big hand has merits. He also should have noticed I was auto betting every flop and check-raised all-in giving him the chance to win it without a contest or suckout.
I had a bet with Ken that if was between the two of us at the end of the tourney we would play it winner takes all. I also had another bet for 500 at 15 to 1 he would win the tourney outright. He ended up finishing 6th so i won that one but sadly didn't get to play head-up winner take all. |

Re: AJ in a 20 pound rebuy with a sidebet
You know it smelled like middle pair, with maybe a flush. Problem is you may have gone broke no matter what here. I still like the smooth call, and push the blank turn for maximum folding equity, but given your loose image, he may have felt pot committed and called anyways thinking his 9's were good, and if not he's got the gutshot, and flush draw. I think I would have called in his position too with two cards to come.
Good post BTW |
