[ QUOTE ]
did you feel obligated to choose something like Casablanca or Citizen Kane as your favorite sober movie?

[/ QUOTE ]

the only obligation I ever feel is to watch the film with an open mind. Casablanca really is my favorite movie.

[ QUOTE ]
for example, if one of your peers said his favorite movie was Forrest Gump, would you lose respect for him?

[/ QUOTE ]

it would depend on his reasons. never underestimate the power of sentiment. now if he honestly thought Forrest Gump was better than Citizen Kane, I'd be inclined to wonder if he's lost it.

[ QUOTE ]
i only ask this because I think film critique in general may very well be a steaming heap of [censored].

[/ QUOTE ]

some of it is. but there's a lot of good stuff out there.

Gattaca, great old school sci-fi? It's one of my favorite films.

I've got two movies on my DVR I've been meaning to watch, Wonderland and I, Robot. Either of them any good?

Admittedly I'm not a "filmie" by any stretch. I've actually just started to make it a point to watch a lot of different movies. So take my comments with the knowledge that I am not well versed in movies at all.

I thought Eternal Sunshine was just genius. It was one of the only movies where I just sat on my couch and thought after watching it. I was thinking about what just happened and how even though I didn't get it all, it was still beautiful.

I've rewatched it plenty since (like I'm sure all Eternal Sunshine fans have) and I love it more than before.

I think the most beautiful part of the movie (and I really haven't cried in any movie, nothing about me being macho cause I'm a pussy, I guess I just haven't) is when they cut to the scene where Joel becomes a child with the striped shirt and cape on and the beautiful music starts. I feel that that is just a perfect moment of movie-making, with cinematography, music (which was amazing in ESoTSM), and vision just all coming together. Yes, that is the pretty much the closest I've ever come to all out crying during a movie.

I don't see how choosing Casablanca is pretentious. It's a masterpiece that goes well with popcorn.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've seen Casablanca, and though I did find it entertaining, I must lack the fine taste to recognize why it's such a masterpiece.

it seems to me like a bunch of people from way back when got together and decided "ok, this movie was great." now after all these years people just keep saying "Casablanca is the greatest!" and then it just gets so trumped up that anybody is afraid to suggest that it might just be an old movie which is only "ok."

They both suck..though I Robot is a much easier movie to watch.
Wonderland is a crappy showtime tv movie masquerading as a film.

You know. That's a great response. It's your opinion and many others. Many others of us, on the other hand, feel that we've arrived at our own opinion and feel that it is exceptional. I don't feel that your taste is any less rarified than my own based on this datapoint. I hope you concede that I may not be being a twit in my response to the movie.
