Need help with a hand
Hi, I'd like someone to tell me the mistakes I made in the following hand. Results in white
It's early in a $50k guarantee qualifier with 16 of 18 remaining. First place gets the ticket, second gets $70. Don't remember the stacks but me and villain both had ~1500, blinds at 10/20 Hero is UTG Villain is SB Dealt to Hero [A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]] Hero raises to 80, folds to villain who raises to 130, Hero calls Pot: 230 Flop [6 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]] Villain checks, Hero bets 120, Villain calls Pot: 470 Turn [J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]] Villain checks, Hero bets 270, Villain raises to 540, Hero goes all-in for 910, Villain calls Pot: 2510 River [2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]] Villain shows [6d 6c] and wins with Full House Hero shows [Ac: Jc] and loses with one pair. Since it's only ten or so hands into the tourney I had no read on the villain, put him on a small pair or AK-AT pre flop, should I fold the turn mini raise? |

Re: Need help with a hand
I'm not a tournament specialist, but I think folding pre-flop might be best. Seems like a very troublesome hand to play UTG (9-handed?) in the first level.
I think a min-raise PF, and a check on this low flop could be a very dangerous sign of strength on the part of your opponent, but if you're going to bet, it has to be more than 1/4 of the pot, because I don't think he's ever ever folding anything to that bet, and you're betting as a bluff, not for value here. I didn't look at the results until after my post, but you shouldn't include them, because they skew people's thought process, and they could seem to discredit people's responses. |

Re: Need help with a hand
Folding or limping pf might be best as others have said. Postflop, I would check the turn. Villain's flop play is very suspicious and your hand is not worth another two bets (meaning that if you bet the turn and end up with your stack in the middle you will not be winning). Check turn and either call a bet on river or value bet if checked to.

Re: Need help with a hand
The 3 bet pre-flop, check-call the flop seems scary. Had you checked behind turn he really doesn't know how much he can get out of you and you probably dont get stacked anyway.

Re: Need help with a hand
Thanks everyone. It seems that I did a lot of things wrong here. But I really didn't think he connected on the flop and that's why I bet (and the pot was 230 PF so my bet post flop was more than 1/2).

[/ QUOTE ] Folding preflop is OK, but raising isn't terrible either. When reraised for so little, you're basically priced in. Betting the flop is OK if you think he's tight enough to fold an unimproved AK there. Check behind on the turn. You'll likely only get a call when behind. Also, checking behind on the turn allows you to call a reasonable sized bet on the river, where he will often bet with a hand he'd fold had you bet the turn. |

My 2 cents
First of all playing 9 handed this early in tourney, I would probably fold AJs since it is a weak hand and the blinds are small. Typically this early in a tourney it will play like a cash game and people will wait for good hands since there is not much to be one in the form of blinds. Also, there are many people to act behind you and you don't have any good reads on the players as of yet and will most likely be out of position if called. In this case you were 3bet by the SB and although his raise was the min amt, you have to put the small blind on a very good hand here. The reason being is that most UTG raises are done with a good hand 88+,AQ+. The small blind if he is a thinking player will know that you have to have a pretty good hand so the small blind is going to need a much better hand to raise you with in this spot. JJ, QQ, KK, AA and AK. Many times when a person 3bets a small amount they want a call which usually means bad things for the person calling the bet. In this case your AJ is in very bad shape. Against JJ, QQ, or KK you are a 70-30 dog to win the hand. Against AK you are dominated and 75-25 dog, and against AA you are in horrible shape. With the blinds being so low at this stage this appears to be an easy fold since you can pick a much better spot later in the tourney. As played on the flop, I would check behind on the flop to keep the pot small and to protect yourself from getting check/raised out of the hand, then on the turn if he checks I would bet 1/2 - 2/3 pot and if you get reraised I would let this hand go since most likely he has a overpair or set. Once you get check raised on the turn your opponent is pot commited and thinks he has the best hand. If you push as you did here you have no fold equity and will be called by your opponent.
