There is no value to be gained from betting, we cannot get him to fold a better hand, and the board is so dry that our hand requires no protection if we are already ahead. |

I usually check this for a similar reasons to as you explained. Against a good player though you might have to face a bet because he wont put you on an ace but how you react depends on your knowledge of how he plays.
Of course against a calling station you can just cbet this flop. |
