Yes but then he gave up poker after flushing his bankroll but can still pay the rent (or his half of it) for 9 months from the money he makes driving a truck part-time?

If you look closely in the check scene, the guy cashing the check is wearing a yamika--he is probably friends with the professor so he let Mike cash such a large check without a fee.

As to his big apartment...come on, the movie is supposed to be about this amazing poker player who can make tons of money. If he and his girlfriend lived in a crappy one room shack it wouldn't be consistent.
