trust me im not defending him [/ QUOTE ] You said he is "pretty average". He's not. One of the reasons his lack of range goes so unrecognized by casual fans is that he's often not even close to balls that he should be fielding. You see a ton of ground balls to the shortstop side of 2nd go through to center and he's *not even in the TV frame* when they switch to the behind-the-plate shot, so it just looks like a clean single, instead of a routine grounder up the middle.
