What is your table image. If it is a tight image and you get raised then you're probably beat. If your an action player than you can get raised with a variety of hands. I don't know why the Late position player wouldn't jam the pot after all the action in front of him on the flop to make people pay for draws. Either way he doesn't believe you have a nine or a King. He could have been slowplaying 98 on the flop? He played this hand too wierd and you already have some dead money in the pot to be worth calling down. So, i would probably have to call him down and make him show a hand.

Thanks for the feedback.. I got some good point of views I wasnt able to see because i was in the situation..

My table image is a straight forward game to those who are paying attention. I would say cut and pasta the preflop chapter on SSHE to the table I was sitting at. The cards werent that great either so i was only playing every 10-20 hands minus the bb

I did end up calling the raise and when a blank came on the river and I bet it she only called.

She turned over 88 for a boat on the flop. She later commented that she was afraid I was holding quad 9s (?!)
