I hope it's not in the Southern Hemisphere, though thatwould make a good vacation one day.

She's one month old.

Discuss.

Not to rain on your parade, but EvilJeff is right, this is a scam. The naming of stars is a process that takes place between two boards of scientists/astronomers, and while it isn't a complicated process, it is a lengthy one. What this company is doing is no different than me saying 'give me money and I will name a skyscraper after one of your loved ones and document it in book form that will be registered with the copywrite office'. You give me money, I publish a book that says the Empire State Building is now named after your loved one and now called the 'inserts loved ones name' Building. Everyone who deals with the building will still call it the Empire State Building. I walks off with your money, and the only person who will call that building by your loved one's name is you and your loved one.

The difference is that instead of trying to put fake names on buildings, which would bring scrutiny on the company because people actually use building's names when discussing locations, they use stars which no one except scientists and astronomers use. This skirts the prospective problem of two people disagreeing over the naming of the object.

It really is unscrupulous of these companies to pull this scam on innocent and well meaning people. But talk about lucrative...endless number of stars x $30, $40, or $50 and that is a boatload of endless cash with the only work being the publishing of the book.

I wouldn't be surprised if they resold stars or made them up completely

[/ QUOTE ]

They would have absolutely no need to do either of these things.

umm, laziness?

Someone beat you too it. I remember hearing about a company who was selling 1 acre patches of moon for a price. I am pretty sure they got in trouble for it though. I wish the star naming people would as well.

My parents bought me a star when I turned one and had it named after me. I don't care.

I think it is a cool idea. Who cares if it is real or not. To you and your daughter it is her star because you got it for her and thus it should always be special.

Since people seem so understanding about this, I will be starting a new business.

Would you like a poker hand named after you? Do you get jealous when you hear people say "I have the Doyle" and you dream they were saying your name instead? For the low low price of only $50 I will name a poker hand after YOU! That is right, you will be immortalized in poker history! I will put it in book form. When I run out of hands, volume 2 will follow with all new names! Don't be left in the cold...get your order in today!

Ahhhh...I can almost taste retirement as I type this.
