Thanks BBV4Lfer's, really appreciate the responses, and I'm going to take another few days to think about it. My apartment is about double the size of a dorm room, and I think it would be really unfair to keep the cat inside too much. I don't live in a city, more like a somewhat busy town, so the only concern would be the German Shepard who lives next door and barks non-stop, and thats basically what it comes down to.

Get a cat and keep it indoors, it's obviously like 100x safer for your pet, which is good because they cost a decent amount of money you don't really want to waste by having your purchase get run over by a car or eated by dids.
