Your sitting with 9 other players at a livegame in Vegas playing NL-Holdem.

Youre in the BB and you see our beloved black aces.

The player under the gun shoves all his money in.

Next player asks him: What do ya have?

UTG-player shows 66 and answers: If you like a coinflip than call!

The other player calls and flips over 77!!

With a big grin the next player calls also and flips over 88!!!

Next player: "Your such a bunch of morons" calls and shows 99!!!!

Next player: EASIEST ... PUSH ... EVER and shows TT!!!!!

Next player (the table coach): Nono easiest call ever and flips over JJ!!!!!!

Next player: "Nice pot" ... "for me" calls and shows QQ!!!!!!!

The button calls with KK and a big grin: "Youre all i.diots!" !!!!!!!!

SB calls and shows red aces!!!!!!!!!

Umm... I had JJ/QQ/KK/AA in a 1/2 NL game the other week with a 1300 pot and 4 people all-in preflop. AA held up and I sadly was QQ.

describe a theoretical situation in which it is correct to fold aces preflop in a no limit cah game

You are in a private game with a drunk Mike Tyson. He pushes all-in with his last $500, and as you look at AA, he says, "What u gonna do bitch?"

even though i am a poker player in training, and not a pro, i do believe i have seen times when i should have folded pair of aces. I have played along time at play money tables to warm up and train the basics, and thats a different game all together. Many times, a table are filled up with nothing but calling stations, and on rare occasions you can be absolutely SURE that noone will fold preflop no matter how many times you raise and reraise or try other intimidating tactics. Even though it is rare at real money tables, it can happen, especially at minimum limit tables. Assuming the game is texas holdem, this changes the nessery strategies drasticly, since bad beats will be more of a rule then an exception. Now paired cards have lower values since straights and flushes will be common. In this rare situations, the best possible pocket cards would high suited connectors. ( im not sure if ace/king would be the best though, due to the lower chance to draw a straight... ) If you wish to read more about this theory, read the "heads up versus multiways games" section of David Sklansky's book "Holdem poker for advanced players"

At any rate, lets imagine that you are at a table where you are absolutely sure that noone will fold preflop...ever. Added to that, you are in middle position, and one or more players have already raised and possibly reraised to a point where you have to pay alot of money just to see the flop. And i mean ALOT, like capped betting limit or higher. In these ( extremly rare ) occasions, i would defenetly fold. Especially if the players behind me have a habit of reraising no matter what cards they have.

Please notice that if the same situation, but alot of betting hasnt taken place, and you dont have to pay alot of money to see the flop, you should always play a pair of aces. However, with a table of this specific game structure, it may be wrong to raise with a pair of aces, that is, if you are absolutely, possitivily and utterly sure that your bet is not going to make anyone fold.
