Re: on ordering cocktails at a bar or restaurant
For me, the complicated drinks I like, few bartenders know. They know more of the so-called girly exotic drinks. Consequently, when I'm out at a bar, I order mostly beer (good beer), but sometimes a Manhattan, a Martini, a gin gimlet, a gin and tonic, or something neat. After I tried ordering a sidecar and got a funny look, I don't trust most bartenders to know how to make cocktails that aren't pink sugarbombs. I'll mix all kinds of weird [censored] for myself, but I wouldn't trouble most bartenders with it. Right now, I'm polishing off a concoction of 2 parts brandy, 2 parts Cointreau, and 1 part Pernod on the rocks. Pretty good, but weird, since Pernod is an acquired taste. I only feel like drinking it very occasionally.

Most of the time, I go for Pina Colada. The rest of the time, I go for something with citrus flavoring.

Re: on ordering cocktails at a bar or restaurant
It pretty much depends on what type of place you are in. If its a college bar stick to pretty simple drinks that are basically just the ingredients or shots. At a nicer places you can get stuff like martinis and manhattans. At these places some of the college type shots might be inappropriate (jager bombs, mind erasers).
Beer and gin and tonics or rum and cokes are fine anywhere. |

Re: on ordering cocktails at a bar or restaurant
i usually just drink Guinness. once in a while bombay and tonic, so that's pretty easy.
my girlfriend loves strawberry long island's and the majority of the time the bartender's have to ask her wtf she's talking about. |

In that case, it's time for a few Irish car bombs. [/ QUOTE ] There's a drink called an Irish car bomb? I find that very offensive. |

Re: on ordering cocktails at a bar or restaurant
Sometimes I order simple drinks and tell them what I want, simply because there's no name for it and no one else orders it. I'll order basically a tequila martini - substitute a bit of squeezed lime for vermouth.
