And most players don't either, unless it's random guy obviously shooting an angle. I prefer to call string calls -- bet $40, guy throws out 7 reds, and ask the dealer if it's a string call. Hilarity ensues.

You can also string fold by mucking your hole cards separately and string post by only putting up the SB when its really your BB and then adding the full amount when the dealer reminds you.

Most of your points are valid. I was unaware that this was how strong bets are usually handled. At the Imperial Palace in Vegas, I was raising a river bet and didn't have quite enough chips to cover the raise, but when I reached back to get the three more I needed, the dealer stopped me and said that it was just a call and I could not raise. Hence my confusion.

However, the "biggest load of crap ever" is actually your own argument that if you aren't vigilant you "deserve" bad things to happen.
