Just want to make sure about this ruling...
Live 4/8 limit game.
I'm in Seat 1 and on the button. Seat 9 is a bad player. It is folded to him. He cuts 8 chips, puts them in the palm of his hand and starts motioning a bet. At that moment I looked at my cards, because I assumed he had put out the raise. I got JTs. Dealer's in front of me and I put out 8 chips and say call. Of course the other player had gotten all cutesy and actually folded his hand Dealer goes: "8 chips... uh, wait a minute, you said call" I take my chips back, explain the situation that I didn't see that the guy hadn't put in the chips over the line in the end. I put them back and say "raise". Is it correct I can't do that? What if I didn't take them back? |

If he made a forward motion his bet stands and your call too

If he made a forward motion his bet stands and your call too [/ QUOTE ] I failed to mention, we got "the line", so players treat it all magically like a wall, like they can do anything as long as it doesn't cross that barrier. According to the other players, seat 9's chips did not cross the magic barrier, but he did make the forward motion. |

Sounds like you've encountered one of the (many) reasons why a betting line sucks.
FWIW, there's really no "good" ruling here. It's going to suck in some fashion or other no matter what. The real answer is to not get over-anxious next time. Wait 'till you know for sure what's going on before acting. |

Re: Just want to make sure about this ruling...
If there is a line, this ruling is simple. If his hand went over the line with chips in it, he HAS to put them in, even if he has no cards, if your 8 chips counts as a valid raise, then they will most likely be counted as a raise depending on the floor. His forward motion is a douchbag move but he did not cross the line.

Re: Just want to make sure about this ruling...
Verbal overrides how many chips you put in. He folded (unknown to you) and you acted in turn by saying call. This is an easy decision for the floor. Players make these fake raises quite often and it's your responsibility to be sure of the action in front of you. This really shouldn't be a big deal either way.

Re: Just want to make sure about this ruling...
In LHE, I usually just put my chips out without saying anything. Had you done that your "call" would have instantly turned into a "raise".
The only time I say something is if I don't think I have enough chips in my hand to do what I want to do. Or if I want to speed up the game while I am gathering my chips. |
