OT: Research Paper on Poker
Ok guys, this may not be allowed but I am going to see.
Doing a research paper for my freshman English class, and I must choose a topic that is controversial in my major. My major is finance/investing, so I am choosing poker as an investment topic. My thesis statement might be something along the lines of this(so I can incorporate the legality issues online recently as well as some other aspects of it): "Although some may question the legality and investment qualities of poker, it can be controlled and used as a positive way to invest your money." I just got this topic and just wrote that right now, so it isn't all that good but I want to be able to incorporate the legality issues and be able to argue those things as well as being able to argue it's a skill game and maybe some other topics can be included if I think of them. What I need from you guys(If this is allowed): I have to have 8 sources. A couple from books and newspapers/journals, and some online ones as well. Do you guys know any articles that have been written on this subject that I could use in my paper? I will obviously be looking this up on my own but she wants me to have 8 sources early since this is a "unique" topic so to be able to write it I have to have a lot of sources very quickly. Thanks guys! |

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
I'd start in the Legislative Forum, they have all kinds of articles and the such. Book wise, I'd use PNL and a math book to prove the legitimacy of poker as a skill game.

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
I don't think this will help a lot, but I remember that DS started a thread about this topic a while ago.

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
we had to pick a consistent topic for three speeches in my public speaking class this semester. i was going to do something about online poker/gambling legality but couldnt find enough sources. i changed it to a topic i care nothing about with plenty of info and havent looked back since. my two cents.

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
Obviously site jman's articles in bluff, aba's blog, cts' blog, my posts, Super System, Play Poker Like the Pros, the Frist Bill, and the BBV anthrology about the AP scandal. There's 8 sources. Thank me later.

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
I think your biggest problem is this...
Poker is not really investing, it's working. Investing implies you put money in, wait a while, and take out profit. That is not poker! Poker is you put money in a bankroll, grind a bunch of hands, and take out profit. In other words, anybody can put some money in blue chip stocks and expect a reasonable return. That's not true about poker. Unless you're talking about backing players, you're not really talking about "investing" any more than someone who buys business suits for work is investing. That being said, if you're looking for sources, include an appendix of lifetime graphs from a dozen winning players... |

Re: OT: Research Paper on Poker
There was a journal paper published in IEEE that used datamining to analyse winning player tendenices. That would be a good source for accademic work.
