Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
I'm a sucker for cooking shows and a big Alton Brown/Good Eats fan, but I found this really annoying. Cooking shows in general have skewed really far away from the cooking process and are now solidly in the personality/drama/pretty pictures stage.
Iron Chef in general has a pretty high camp factor, but this went too far for me. |

It's ok so far but I wish the show was presented in a more professional way like Top Chef, the show is a little cheesy like it should be on FOX. [/ QUOTE ] So far as I can tell they're cheesing it up on purpose to be like the original Iron Chef. Did you notice the ridiculous smokey-cam in the judging? |

Wow,a completely different calibre of contenstat from Top Chef, these guys are legit. [/ QUOTE ] My girlfriend and I think that there are about eight Top Chef contestants who would have rolled these cats if they got NINETY minutes for each of two desserts. It would have been the laziest quickfire ever. Hung alone could have made ten good desserts if he had that kind of time. Plus, several of them didn't even attempt to do a "savory" dessert, which is nuts. I know their resumes are strong and all, but something just seems off. They didn't seem as impressive in this challenge as I think a lot of the Top Chefs would have. WTF with "you've used this in your restaurant." So the challenge is to create an unusual dessert out of thin air? What level of existing knowledge is allowed? Did they even explain that new-ness was one of the criteria? This put me on total tilt. Maybe they should have had to work blindfolded too. Also WTF with the broken freezer. How does that happen? SamIAm good point re: product placement. Judges' table should show more judge deliberation. We don't have to see tiny snippets of commentary on every single dish. I'll still watch it because I do think it has potential, but the first episode struck me as a boring copy of Top Chef. If it doesn't improve, I may have to toss it out of my TV rotation in one of the Glad family of products. |

Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
Reading elsewhere, the point was made that FTV had them turn off the vents in the kitchen in order to get usable audio. The end result was that it was crazy hot, which would explain a lot.
This show does have a problem, inasmuch as Top Chef does the same thing A LOT better. Check the blog on www.ruhlman.com for more info. |

I don't see how they're even in the same category. I would love to see some of the best people from Top Chef compete in a food-centric challenge. Hopefully NIC won't turn into surprise drama and leadership tests as the season goes on. |

cbloom,
I can only assume you've never actually watched an ep of top chef. |

Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
Bump for Ep 2.
I thought the challenges were super interesting, although I would have made the first one "reward and the 2nd elimination. Nuking people basically because they don't grasp stuff that is 100% not required to know as an Iron Chef is dumb (and I hate how they acted like it was during the show, as if we've never watched Iron Chef ourself). |

Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
dids,
I agree. They would never have an elimination round on Top Chef where a large portion of the chefs would struggle like that. In my opinion the technology would have made a perfect quickfire |

Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
Kinda stupid they made these great chefs struggle with stuff only Wylie Dufresne cares about. Still like the show though.

Re: The Next Iron Chef Episode 1
i thought episode 3 was phenomenal, especially since they showed a lot of deliberation, and a great deal of the factoring behind the elimination of the two chefs. john besh has been the favorite to win since episode 1, and i think arron sanchez is just behind him. however, if neither of them can go outside of their strength (southern and mexican respectively) then i think mike symon can sneak in (being a native clevelander, i'm rooting for that.) i don't think cosentino has much of a shot. |
