Re: Rick Reilly moving to ESPN
[ QUOTE ]
See, making this move was as surprising seeing a bishop at a porn convention. It left me more wide-eyed than Reche Caldwell after a truck full of Red Bull. But you never know where the line is until you actually step over it. It's funny how sometimes a Boulder kid ends up making the boldest move of all. </many sportswriter of year trophies> [/ QUOTE ] BIMO. I used to love Reilly, but I've gotten sick of him. Not sure if it's his fault or not -- you read somebody long enough, and you'll start to get sick of them. I do think some of the actual "reporting" he's done that end up creating columns for him is a bit questionable -- the way he handed the Sosa thing, for instance, was poor. Where did Steve Rushin go, btw? I stopped reading SI for a few months (just sort of let it fall off) and when I picked it up again, I noticed he was gone. -McGee |

Re: Rick Reilly moving to ESPN
[ QUOTE ]
On the subject of magazines, and I guess you could throw in other print media like newspapers, there is a belief that these mediums are rapidly (and perhaps obviously) becoming obsolete due to the Internet. That said, does anyone think there will still be a place for these long term (5, 10, 20 years)? And if so, how/why? (waiting situations such as a medical office, the barbers, and yes the washroom come to mind). [/ QUOTE ] Magazines are suffering in general, yes. But there are some advantages to print, such as portability. Plus there is more permanence. As long as SI keeps doing special editions for major sports championships, they'll still be able to keep people subscribing. |

Re: Rick Reilly moving to ESPN
I don't think Reilly's leaving will impact the SI reader base at all. I'm sure for some his column is the first thing people flip to (years ago it was for me, but the shtick wore me out and now I only read it if the topic is of interest).
The bad news is, people going to ESPN seems to be a sign that they're starting to suck. So we'll see how this turns out. |

Re: Rick Reilly moving to ESPN
Rick Reily is pretty replaceable. I haven't read SI in years but they used to have another column by Steve Rushin that was the same stuff.
Just what ESPN needs, another talking head on TV who cracks jokes but has no actual insight on sports. |

Where did Steve Rushin go, btw? [/ QUOTE ] I assume he killed himself after finding out that marrying a WNBA player wasn't the answer to all of his financial prayers. |
