[ QUOTE ]

Can anyone out there make me feel better about what life is like there (schools, outdoor activities, live B&M, crime, cleanliness, weather, etc. etc.)? Everything I've ever heard about this city makes it sound like God bent over and

I was born and raised in DETROIT and love the place. I live in a suburb of DETROIT and have now for about 10 years. Most people that work within the city of DETROIT live outside the city in a suburb. There are PLENTY of nice suburbs around DETROIT. Farmington Hills is nice, Bloomfield Hills is a VERY rich community, Beverly Hills, MI is a wealthy area, the Canton are is nice as well. If you have a bias towards arab americans do not move to Dearborn or Dearborn Heights, MI.

Outdoor activities are abundant. We have the great lakes which are excellent for fishing or water sports. We have up north which is an unbelieveable get away or quick vacation area. Hunting is HUGE here as well. 3 casinos have poker rooms all with pretty good action. Greektown is my favorite and the one I frequent the most, Motor City is a nicer casino and has a better room just smaller with 12 tables as opposed to 20 for Greektown. MGM just opened look for a topic about it on here discussed in pretty good detail.

The city itself is a pretty dirty city for now, but again some of the suburbs are VERY clean and well taken care of.

Weather: If you like the change of seasons you would love it here. The only thing that sucks is winter. We are on the precipise of it now and when the sun gets behind a brooding sky we will not be likely to see it again until April. Winters get like that here. It is not like Minnesota where they do have cold winters, but the sun doesnot hibernate on them. (I know I have been there in the winter)

Schools I am not that up on because I have no children, but the outlying areas have very nice schools.

One thing you didnt ask about is sports, but I am a big sports guy so will give my quick 2 cents. The sports here are unbelieveable. The Pistons have been contenders for the last 5 years (really good teams with good records making the playoffs and going deep every year) The Tigers have been playing great the past 2 years and will get better, The Red Wings are a hallmark with the NHL. The stadiums are excellent also. Comerica Park and Ford Field are right across the street from one another both are new and both are awesome. The Palace is in Auburn Hills about an hour drive from DETROIT and is a wonderful stadium.

I will never move.

Livonia itself is a very nice city. My brother lives in Livonia and lives in a sub where the average house runs around 300k

Downtown detroit is quite tolerable. It's like a hurricane, downtown is the decent eye of the storm, outside of downtown is pretty rundown, burnt down , abandoned houses, outside that it's fine. I should get a few friends of mine who did electrical and EMS work in the detroit ghetto area to post some stuff.

But the suburbs, as stated before, are very nice. Oakland County is one of the richest counties in the country. I live in Royal Oak, which's downtown area is the nice downtown area Detroit wishes it could be.

DT Royal Oak is where the Real World almost did a show.
