Open Itunes -

Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing

Click drop down arrow next to "Import Using" select Apple Lossless. This will give you an exact copy of your CD.

File sizes will be much larger than MP3, but quality will be much higher. It may make a little difference on your Ipod, but you'll notice it more using an amp (probably).

Anyway, hope that helps.

Amazon is now selling mp3's for $.99/song with none of that DRM crap. The ones I've downloaded have been 256Kbps and sound good.

I've recently set up a music server and bought a Squeezebox that I've attached to my amplifier.

I'm ripping all my CDs as FLAC, so there's no loss of quality. The downside is that a CD takes up 300-450 MB of storage, so it's not really feasible for portable players.

I don't know of any online music services that offer lossless formats.

Hmm, so it's not going to sound as good on my iPod? I'm open to the thought of getting a different portable device if it is going sound significantly better.

Using FLAC doesn't work with iTunes, is it easy to configure Rhapsody or something to get my songs imported onto my iPod?

I'd suggest ripping one of your CDs using apple lossless and simply testing with your own ears if it makes a difference.

If it sounds better, do it. You may need to buy a new Ipod classic (160 GB) if you have a large collection and want it with you at all times.

Many people buy new or used CDs on Amazon.
Then they import them using Apple loseless.
Then they resell the CDs on Amazon.
This will give you the best quality at the
cheapest price.

Also, your local library probably has a collection of some CDs you could use.

I'll probably experiment with this a little bit and see how much better lossless music sounds on iTunes. I'll most likely get a new classic, 160gb is pretty awesome.

forgive my ignorance, but how do I rip songs from cd's in lossess audio form? can it be done using windows media player? if not, is lossless audio really that much better than rippin cd's at 192kbps/256kbps?

I use Exact Audio Copy and FLAC to rip in lossless format. I don't know if the iPod will play FLAC though.

I wouldn't say that lossless is *much* better than a good MP3 rip, but it is better and I have enough disk space that I don't care that the files take up 5 times as much space.
