Was this at the Borg? If so, that's pretty rare. Most of the dealers there don't do anything such as this.

Even so, I wouldn't get into a huff about it in the situations that you described. If it persists or really bothers you, then mention it to the dealer as an aside, as has already been suggested.

[ QUOTE ]
A new player sits down at the table and asks the dealer "how's he been playing" referring to me as I was the big stack. Dealer replies with "He's been playing everyone like a fiddle".

[/ QUOTE ]

Very not cool. The dealer probably thought he was paying you a compliment. They should simply realize what they should talk about and what they shouldn't. No big deal I guess, dealers are just people.

[ QUOTE ]

The dealer did not bring it up, he was asked a question. Tell me, how should he have answered it?

A. "He's a very good player, that's how he got all those chips."

B. "He's a fish, he can't play a lick."

c. "I hadn't noticed."

d. "No comment, sir. There's nothing I can say at this point that won't spark a thread on 2+2."

[/ QUOTE ]

You honestly and truly can't do any better than that? I find that hard to believe.

Let's say you get to the river and your opponent makes a bet at you. As you mull it over, you ask the dealer "What do you think he has here?" Well, the dealer was asked a question, he has to answer, right?

Don't be retarded. The dealer can say, or not say, anything he wishes, as long as it doesn't answer the question. He could just smile and be quiet, he could not smile and be quiet, he could say "I can't say", he could even say if he's feeling a little saucy "He's been winning" (which is fairly obvious, since his stack is big.)

Sorry, I'm not buying what you're selling at all.

He is just saying there are much bigger problems than dealers making comments like this.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, I was ranting pretty good there.

Again, hold us dealers to a higher standard--just don't make it an impossible standard.

"The dealer told me that he thinks my wife is the ugliest woman he's ever seen."
"After the hand was over, the dealer said he thought I had AA."

I think a dealer should get fired for the first quote.

A lot of people in this thread think he should be shot for the second one.

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't be freaking ridiculous. It is so ridiculously easy for a dealer simply not to make the second comment, we shouldn't even be talking about it.

Let me be clear: No, the dealer shouldn't say anything, because the player will invariably get upset.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, the dealer shouldn't say anything because it's the wrong thing to do .

[ QUOTE ]
My whole point is, the player should not get upset, if the same words spoken by someone else would not upset them.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course it would. But then it wouldn't necessarily be wrong. (It would be wrong if the player said something related to what he thinks the player's cards are - then the floor should be called. Or the dealer should speak up! Imagine that.)

[ QUOTE ]
I'll go so far as to say that such a double standard is prejudicial. You've got to be prejudiced against dealers if you're going to take offense to any comment that they would make, that would not offend you if spoken by someone else.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm starting to think you're just not very bright.

[ QUOTE ]
But suggesting that otherwise benign words become malignant when spoken by the employee, that concept just escapes me.

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, you're just not too bright.

I think those of us involved deeply in this industry forget sometimes that people who don't know any better actually give dealers a modicum of respect here and there.

If it happened to me I would post it on 2+2, thereby getting a dealer vs. player debate started; we don't have enough of those.

This all just comes down to dealer training. Any competently trained dealer knows better than to try and read your hands aloud. Now the dealer could be trained not to do this and do it anyway, but I find in certain cardrooms that themes of poor etiquette emerge and I realize that it is management's fault.
