On a laptop you almost certainly can just plug the monitor in (before you turn it on) and then configure it from the control panel. If your desktop PC doesn't have two monitor plugs (if it does, it works the same as the above), then you need to install a second video-card that does support dual-monitors and then everything should be golden.
