Fold straight to worst river ever???

Well maybe not worst river ever but its pretty damm close.

This is a $2MTT on UB from about 2 weeks ago and do not have the HH....sorry in advance [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Blinds were 20/40

Hero has ~t4500 and is in HJ
Villian has ~ t2500 and is in BB (Doubled early on w/ AA > QQ AIPF hasn't done much cept splash around a bit)

Preflop:

Hero raises to 120 with 7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
Villian calls

Flop
8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Villian leads out t200, Hero calls

Turn

Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Villian checks, Hero checks

River

10 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Villian "bets pot" t660, Hero goes into the tank.

No comments about fold preflop please (I had my reasons)...Comments more on postflop and what to do on the river.

why worry about preflop - playing sc offensive from the HJ is a reasonable play.

river is really terrible, your straight has just turned into a bluff-catcher. i don't think he bluffs often enough on this board to make it worth a call and the pot is small - i'd let it go.

depends on the raise size/ pot odds, but usually yes

If blinds are only 20/40, you have to fold this on the river as played. There will be better opportunities later to make $$.

I wound up tanking till I almost timed out then made a "hero call"...Villian flips up AKo...hero wins.

I think most of the time I fold but something about the way Villian played the hand didn't make sense:

1) No way Villian has the flush, seemed more like a calling station and wouldn't bet the flop on a draw.

2) A hand with a J in it was a real concern, however the only hands I could think of that Villian would call PF and bet the flop would be a J9 or a J8 type hand. Again I use my reasoning from my first point to back this up...i.e. if Villian had J10 I believe he would c/c and not b/c, just didn't seem the type.

3) Villian has a set, which IMO was the hand that made the most sense to me...Villian bets flop and checks on a Q turn looking to CR hoping that card hit me. Then bets the "pot" (I put pot in quotations because many UB players overuse the bet pot button and badly as well) as a blocker.

fwiw i like the call if villain had the flush at this buy in they generally check raise river

I am not sure about the river, but I definitely like a bet on the turn. When he donks the flop and checks an overcard turn like that, I think you can pick up the pot a huge % of the time, and when you don't, you can fire another barrel at a lot of rivers (never getting bluffed yourself.)
