Tipped the floor for the 1st time last week. . .now i feel dirty

And how often do floormen change shifts? And aren't there more than one floorman working at any given time?

Tipping the floor/brush is not the same as tipping the dealer. Poker dealers are kind of like waitstaff. You are expected to tip them at a certain level. You're fine there.

Some folks tip the floor. Some don't. Some places it's OK. Some it isn't. If you want to tip a floor, offer the tip and ask if it's OK. He'll either say yes or no. If he says yes and gets fired that's on him.

standard operating procedure IMHO, I see this all the time - its good for marketing and often encouraged in some rooms provided they don't get into detail on an individual player. Of course I ignore the floors opinion because he or she is often clueless about playing poker.

This is something that is done to all players? If so, I guess I don't really have a problem with it. It just seems like there's a very grey line there.

Exactly my experience. I take scouting reports from floors with a grain of salt.



I am thankful for the perks they give us though. But I don't tip to jump lists (though that sometimes seems what they want to do for me, too often IMHO).



It was nice when me and a friend asked for a comp at a swipe card poker room and the floor wrote us an "open-comp" for dinner (did not take it off my card and sky was the limit at dinner). I thanked him with more then a red bird for that one (and damn worth every penny!).


FWIW, I don't tip the floor every session but if I like 'em & I've had a big session (for me), I'll toss 'em a red bird like ringing a bell. I DON'T expect anything in return but do notice certain perks come my way at times.YMMV.

One reason to tip the floor (if they are clueful) is to get hints as to what games are good. That's a teensy, tiny thing that they can do for you that they won't do for everybody (and you don't even have to tip the floor to get that...just be a friendly regular). As TT says they don't all know anything about poker, but they do know what tables they've been sending lots of stacks of chips to and perhaps whom on the table has rebought 4 times. That's not exactly giving away trade secrets.

I look for excuses to toke the floor. If I enjoy a nice chat with a suit and he spends a few minutes telling me stories or whatever, I'll remember him on the way out. I always (almost) toke the person giving me a comp, whomever that is, though usually it's a suit. If I get a HHJ big enough to be toking the dealer $10 I hand the floor doing the paperwork $5. I was playing BJ with out of town friends who asked "what strip club" and they vetoed Spearmint Rhino 'cause it sounded too nice; I headed to the poker room, asked the 20-something floor working there I know whom I happened to KNOW frequents the clubs, and he suggested a couple more sawdusty joints with some explicit suggests for how to get more than a pretty view...that was worth a toke, of course.

But I don't expect to get a ruling in my favor because I toke, I don't expect to get put at the top of any wait list, and I don't ask for anything that could ever get someone in trouble for providing to me.

Toke the floor if you like. Don't feel bad if you don't.

at the borgota there are a couple (altleast 3 that i know well) that both deal and than put a suit on during different days. In this case they have friends that are dealers, so when there is a 20 people deep list or the 80/160 game is real spicy and you know being third on the list means waiting until tomorrow to play you can find one of the floors, and let them know you're going to toke the dealer friend -- make sure to leave a little something for the dealer also ... gl all

These threads on tipping always get a wide variation of opinion. In some respects all answers are correct. In a better world wages would reflect the value of the job and there would be no reason or need to tip. Even then, I suspect that some would still tip, hoping for an advantage in their level of service.

That said, I almost always tip the floor person when I first get in the game. If I play a long shift I also tip the replacement floor when they come on duty. I usually tip the chip value of the game I am in, ie: 5,10,20 or 25.oo.

I find that I get a floor person who is attentive to my needs and wants. Games get started sooner if I am on the list for example. I do not want or get rulings that are preferential. My view is that I play for social enjoyment with a limited amount of time to wait for games. I also enjoy being able to get specific sports on a nearby TV without trouble.

Do what you want but you might be surprised at the value you get from a few tips.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that a floor is paid a living wage and, unlike a dealer, is not generally relying on tips to provide a necessary part of income. Do poker supervisors who are tip-eligible make substantially less in wage income than pit supervisors who are prohibited from accepting tips?
