Some whisky can be chilled or served with ice - but the general idea is that ice and chilling will deaden the flavours & remove a lot of the subtle tastes in better malts.

Some of the non-chill filtered scotch will go slightly cloudy if you add ice or cold water. It's still OK, but not what people expect to see. For Glenlivet / Glenfiddich ice and water is fine. As soon as you think about adding dry or coke then just grab cheaper blend.

Add what you like to make the drink you like.

With red wine, recorking and storing in the fridge will get a few extra days out of it. As with scotch, serving it chilled will deaden the taste somewhat. Then again, a chilled shiraz or cab sav on a hot day is very good.

What's the cheapest Macallan? I would probably prefer that to the Glenlivet, again, just personal preference.

The MaCallan 12 yr is usually priced between the Balvenie and the Glenlivet . The MaCallan 18yr is better but at over $100 a bottle it's more then most people want to spend.

for all of the people that are putting water and ice in their single malts, buy a reidel single malt glass for about $20 if you are even somewhat serious about scotch. It really smooths out the fire that many have problems with. easily one of the best investments that i've made in my scotch drinking

Yeah, forgot about this thread. Has anyone had Glenlivet 18, and how does it compare to Macallan?

I'm getting a 21 year Macallan in the next week, pretty exciting to move up the scotch ranks

I've had both the Macallan 12 and Glenlivet 15. I found both to be fairly disappointing. That may just be because I tend to like the more peaty Scotches. I haven't been buying too much Scotch lately, but when I do its usually Talisker 10yr or Aardberg 10yr.

"Beware of anyone who is knowledgeable about Scotch, for the only way to get there is to drink far too much Scotch."
