Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
I like your statistical approach and thank you for it. However, it doesn't include Norv's current reign and the fact that Wannstedt and Mike Shula have ran collegiate programs into the ground. However I think the fact that they were given second and third chances says something, where Kotite and Morningweg never will. Spurrier also has succeeded at the collegiate level three times now, I feel his name shouldn't be here.

Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
Spurrier is a good college coach, and I agree his name does not belong anywhere near this discussion.

Results below. From left to right, the numbers are: coach's winning percentage, team's winning percentage w/o him, difference between the two, number of games coached, and 5th Order Losses Above League Average (LALA5). Please forgive the crude chart. ..................C'sW%....T'sW%....Diff....Gam es.....LALA5 Mike Shula ---- .268 -- .418 -- -.150 -- 71g -- 10.65 [/ QUOTE ] What? THe last thing I want to be is a Shula apologist, but where are you getting these numbers? Shula's only head coaching job was at Alabama, where he was 26-23. |

Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
At the risk of bringing up some painful memories, here you go:
"Pepe Pearson runs up the middle for no gain. Michigan takes over on downs!!!" With any other coach we would have at least one, if not two or three national championships in the 90's. |

Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
That's supposed to be David Shula, who coached the Bengals to 19 wins and 52 losses. In his last season the Bengals started 1-6, then finished 7-2 under Bruce Coslet.

Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
Buddy's boys had won the division 2x and a few years later Richie the K runs them into the ground and gets fired. Ray Rhodes takes team to 11 wins at 2nd round of playoffs before loss at SB Champs Dallas.
With Jets was 3-13 and 1-15. Following year Jets are 9-7. |

Re: Who is the worst coach ever?
[ QUOTE ]
Umm there is no question its Marty Mornhinweg, for those of you who dont remember i'll refresh your memories: about 5 years ago he was detroit lions head coach and was in an overtime game against the bears. Reasons why he is the dumbest [censored] ever -> 1. He won the toss and elected to kick 2. His defense got a 3 and out, however on 3rd down there was holding on the bears. Instead of taking the punt, Marty decided to take the penalty. The bears then converted the 3rd and 20 and drove on to win the game. I don't see anything that can top this [/ QUOTE ] I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll reiterate it here. October 16, 1994 Eagles at Cowboys Rich Kotite's Eagles started the season 4-1 in 1994 and were at a rainy Texas Stadium. The Eagles cut the lead in the 4th to 24-13, and Kotite decides to go for 2. Why? Because the rain had smudged the 2-point conversion chart to where he couldn't read it. 2-point conversion fails, they lose, end up 7-9 that year and missing the playoffs, then gets hired by the Jets the next year and leads them to a 4-28 record over two seasons. I don't know if it tops Marty Mornhinweg's overtime brain meltdown, but it's up there. |
