Re: Quick Game: Help Nich come up with good idea
Eventhough the scouting is always for presentation skills and soft skills it's usually great if you have a small topic that people usually don't spend much time thinking about.
If the audience feels like they have learned something they can apply this works best. that's why the peanut butter works great but the Atlanta Braves don't (feels more like lecturing) |

Re: Quick Game: Help Nich come up with good idea
i think the homemade pizza idea is a winner
the only thing that really important is making the dough, and that can be taught in 5 minutes |

Re: Quick Game: Help Nich come up with good idea
Poker odds and retirement savings are out imo.
Because it's math and legalese, audience might get bored and not follow very well. |

building a computer seems good but could that be taught in 5 minutes? [/ QUOTE ] It might seem good but people are idiots. So if you ask for computer parts etc don't expect good answers from the audience. I also think it's hard to visualize the real building part. |

how to count odds in poker [/ QUOTE ] bad, better would be the rules of poker (remember you're not trying to teach you're trying to show you know how to teach). rules of poker not actually a bad topic. start with the basics and then if you think you have time you can explain the specifics of 5 card draw or hold em. i give rules of poker a 6 or a 7 as a topic (doable but not great). [ QUOTE ] how to choose a television (type and size) [/ QUOTE ] this vaguely sucks because of the necessity for external reference materials. i give it a 3. [ QUOTE ] how to build a computer [/ QUOTE ] boardwork would be a nightmare, unless you're talking about what parts to buy, then external reference materials again. 3 also. [ QUOTE ] how to fake seer [/ QUOTE ] 1. too obscure. How to play Mafia (the live version) is actually not a bad topic though, i give THAT a 7 or an 8. [ QUOTE ] how to hook up a home theater [/ QUOTE ] boardwork again. 2. [ QUOTE ] how to make homeade pizza (dough, pizza stone, toppings) [/ QUOTE ] making and shaping of dough probably too tough to do without visuals. 3. [ QUOTE ] how to procrastinate [/ QUOTE ] procrastinate what? if you can come up with good specifics this is a pretty good topic. 7. [ QUOTE ] how to save for retirement (401k, roth ira, etc; prolly too much for 5 mins) [/ QUOTE ] this is my favorite of the ones you've listed, except you're right taht it's probably too much. you'd know better than me how best to narrow. |

Re: Quick Game: Help Nich come up with good idea
what about how to choose tv?
types: plasma/lcd/crt/dlp/projector size: based on viewing distance but i'm not sure they'll be able to shout out examples of types say i do 'make homeade pizza'...i just ask them for toppings they like? there isn't much audience interaction in the part about making the dough...and i shouldn't just focus on the ingredients, more on the process of mixing then kneading then rising then rolling? ugh |
