Set on a scary board
Villain has had the kill on for about 3 hands now. He plays too many hands, and chases draws a lot. While he is aggro, I haven't seen him get out of line.
Villain checks his kill option UTG, folded to me and I raise KK in MP. Folded to villain who calls. Flop: Kd Td 9c check, bet, call Turn: 7d check, bet, villain checkraises, I call. River: Jd Villain bets, hero ?? |

Re: Set on a scary board
I hate folding a set, but this river card is probably the worst in the deck. You can safely fold here.

Re: Set on a scary board
I probably threebet the turn, and then call down if my opponent gives me further action. You have to keep in mind, that if you are behind on the turn, you also have ten outs to win on the river.
Headsup, on the river, no matter how scary the board, you can't fold top set for one bet. On the other hand, you have to give some respect to a bet with this board, so you can't raise. So.....you call. |

Re: Set on a scary board
I know the board sucks, but you just can never fold top set on the river for one bet. Ever.

Re: Set on a scary board
i'm trying to stove this but there are so many goddamn hands with diamonds in it, and I don't know how to imput those and only those into the villain's range.
The good news about the river is that if you were ahead on the turn, the river doesn't change too much. Sure, some of this 2 pair hands and lower sets just caught a flush to catch up, but if this is the kind of player who won't stop firing once he has the lead regardless of what is on board, then you have to call, even if you assign him a tight 4th street CRing range. |

I know the board sucks, but you just can never fold top set on the river for one bet. Ever. [/ QUOTE ] I dunno if that statement is serious or not, but if it is, then you should reconsider your thought processes during hands. Basically, at all times, you should be making reads, and then deciding what the best way to use your reads is. Sometimes that means folding on a scary board. Sometimes it means calling with K high or valuebetting A high. |

Re: Set on a scary board
IMO, a situation where I would seriously consider folding top set heads up happens so rarely I'd rather call the bet 4 times a year than outthink myself into folding a winner.
Yes, every decision is read dependent. I agree. |

Re: Set on a scary board
Am I really good 1 in 8 times here?
At the time, the river card seemed like a twisting of the knife. Looking at it more closely though, I don't think it changes much. If I was ahead on the turn (to his two pair) then I'm almost certainly still ahead unless he has a 9d. The only hands I beat are T7, 97 and 77, as I know he would have popped me on the flop if he had hit a smaller set there. Meanwhile, QJ (probably also unlikely), J8, 86 and any diamond has me beat. To answer my own question, yes I think I'm good 1 in 8. Unfortunately after a long, bad session, I folded and he showed me T7. I then proceeded to go on life tilt, but fortunately just folded a few hands and racked up for the night. |
