Re: LV Hilton closing poker room 10/17
I've played many tournaments (won only a few) at PH and I have heard quite a few times that people walk to Paris and see there is nothing going on period and tournaments are cancelled so they come over to PH to check it out and are quite impressed. But you're right about the 2/4 players probably not going to Bellagio.

Re: LV Hilton closing poker room 10/17
[ QUOTE ]
At Harrah's the dealers claim how busy the poker room is depends incredibly on who the floor is. Most of the Harrah's floor people get on the casino-wide PA and announce the games at least every 15 minutes. Some do this about every 2 hours. The dealers swear this makes a huge difference, and nights with vocal floors they'll have 6 tables going while nights with a mute floor they'll have 3. [/ QUOTE ] This aspect interests me and I think has merit. I think the people who do it more frequently do so possibly because they are more interested getting on the mic in the first place. If one of them who does it more often is a more friendly and welcoming, "so c'mon by and try out the poker-room. We have open-seats available now for anyone who wants to give poker a try" then that can make a big difference vs. someone who is uncomfortable on the mic and hesitantly says, "attention players, now seating at 2/4 holdem." Even just the ability to speak clearly and have a good mic-presence vs. someone who kind of mumbles can make a difference and it really doesn't even need to depend on the friendliness of the voice. Many of you might think this is a nitty detail I'm looking at. But there's a reason why those who can speak clearly and have good voices are hired for advertisments on TV and radio etc...and why someone who doesn't do it regularly who is reading some local spot for their own business will sound so much cheaper and unprofessional. As far as getting tourists/conventioneers to respond to an announcement to "give poker a try" the mic-presence of the announcer could definitely make a difference. |

[ QUOTE ]
Tropicana and Riviera are independent. If they close the poker room, the companies have NO poker presence in Vegas, and any tiny fraction of guests who actually want to stay in a place with a poker room will be lost. So they may (or may not) be a bit more stubborn about keeping 'em open. [/ QUOTE ] I agree, there are fewer reasons to close their rooms - except of course if they are unprofitable. |

Re: LV Hilton closing poker room 10/17
There is no doubt that the use fo the microphone can have a benefit for the room.ut these dealers may be overstating the effect. Part of the difference may not actually have anything to do with the microphone, and the floors use of the microphone may relate to the response they expect to get.
The floorperson working weekday mornings may have already learned that there is little response to repeated announcements so he doesn't get on the microphone every 15 minutes. And maybe the guy working Weekend swing shift being on the mic every 15 minutes isn't accounting for the larger number of players, perhaps thats just a busier time. On other note. I have been at Harrah's and never once heard an announcement for the poker room. I have been passed up on the list because I wasn't in the room when a seat came open and they never paged me so I assumed they didn't even have a way to announce out into the casino. |

Re: LV Hilton closing poker room 10/17
I guess I'll be one of the last to play at the ol LV Hilton as I will be arriving there Sat Oct 13th and leaving on the 16th.
What are the normal games they have running there anyway? I would assume 1/2 NL and 2/4, 3/6 limit? As for some of these rooms closing and poker consolidating I think it is inevitable that it will happen and good for LV poker in the long run. I would love to see 2 or 3 rooms that have several thriving mid-limit holdem games. We just had a rake increase up here at Canterbury Park ($5 max and $1 BBJ drop) and it does seem a little slower. What Vegas rooms have increased the rake to 5 max recently? Is it only Harrah's properties?? |

Your concept is a common falicy, [/ QUOTE ] OK, you're right. Adam Smith made a common "falicy" when he wrote about the effects of competition on an economy. I'm sick of arguing about this and were not going to convince each other of anything. Feel free to have the last word. |

[/ QUOTE ] consolidation will only help low limit games, midlimit games barely exist in Vegas, there are only three options now as it is and only one of those three rooms is guaranteed to have a game spread at any one time. A Commerce style card barn might correct that I think (hope?) but as I mentioned earlier thats illegal here. |

[/ QUOTE ] Poker is not a basic competition model because you must have other players to have a game. It is somewhat similar to sports teams competing. If the Yankees were to put the Indians out of business this is bad for them. |
