This really depends. Sometimes large words help communicate thoughts more succinctly, and other times people use them just to sound smarter. In the latter smaller words usually work much better.

The way it comes off is really person dependant. Some people can use a large vocabulary and sound very elegant, whereas others just sound like they are trying really hard to appear smart. I think most people fall into the 2nd group.
