The cynic in me wants to say "I waited 14 years for that? And there is a pretty powerful sting of disappointment.
However, it doesn't change how much fun the end of the regular season was, and how impressed I was with this team's resiliency down the stretch. Manuel will probably win manager of the year, but this says more about the voters than his abilities. I don't want him back. All year long we heard that he should be commended for his work with the hitters and for keeping the team loose. First of all, there has to be someone out there who can do that and also can do at least a C- job of managing a game and a pitching staff. Second of all, that was not a loose team that just got swept out of the playoffs. Manuel panicked with the early Kendrick hook in game 2, and the team panicked with him. |
